Propeller to Publish New Fiction by Mary Rechner in Fall 2023


Propeller Books will publish a new fiction project by Mary Rechner in the fall of 2023. The book, titled Marrying Friends, follows a number of friends and family members during a tumultuous and transformative year on Long Island, New York. It is currently scheduled for release on October 24.

Rechner’s story collection, Nine Simple Patterns for Complicated Women, was published by Propeller Books in 2010 and was named to the long list for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. The book will be reissued as part of the Northwest Collection series in May of 2023, with a new foreword by Oregon writer Miriam Gershow.

Rechner’s novella, The Opposite of Wow, was published in the Hong Kong Review in 2019.

Rechner’s fiction has appeared in publications such as New Letters, Harvard Review, Gettysburg Review, New England Review, Kenyon Review, and Washington Square. A recipient of fellowships from Literary Arts and the Regional Arts and Culture Council, she has taught fiction writing at Portland State University and the University of Portland, and currently teaches media arts to high school students.

Propeller Books is an independent press in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to its publishing projects, the press operates a retail bookstore with a focus on Pacific Northwest writers and topics in the Urbanite building in Portland, Oregon.
