Pauls Toutonghi to Discuss 1986 Mt. Hood Tragedy on Think Out Loud Tuesday
THE COVER STORY of the November issue of Outside magazine is by Portland writer Pauls Toutonghi. The issue includes a number of pieces on the theme of “Terror in the Wild,” and Toutonghi’s article concerns the ill-fated 1986 climb of Mt. Hood undertaken by three adults and ten students from Oregon Episcopal School. The hike was supposed to be a one-day summit, but when the weather turned, the hiking party became lost in white-out conditions. Seven students and two adults died.
Toutonghi will speak about the disaster and his attempt to write respectfully about it on OPB radio’s “Think Out Loud” program at noon on Tuesday.
